An early morning argument over a vehicle turned violent late last week, ending with one Sampson man jailed and another injured.

James Howard, 55, of 134 Darkwood Lane, Clinton, remained in the Sampson County Detention Center late Monday afternoon charged with one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

According to Cpl. Marcus Smith with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, Howard was taken into custody around 3 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, just a few hours after the incident, which occurred at the intersection of The Avenue and Concord School Road, not to far from a hog farm.

Smith said Howard and a 42-year-old male got into an argument over a vehicle. During the altercation, Smith said, the suspect struck the victim in the head with a metal pipe. The victim went to Sampson Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injury and officers investigating the incident brought Howard in for questioning, eventually leveling the assault charge.

He was jailed under a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to make his first appearance in Sampson County District Court Friday, Aug. 30.

No condition report was immediately available on the victim.
