A Sunday morning accident on State Road 1751 north of Clinton has claimed the life of another Sampson County resident, this one an 81-year-old woman driving alone.

According to N.C. Highway Patrol reports, Mary Waters Matthews of Auctioneer Road, Clinton, died from injuries she sustained in the accident.

The wreck occurred at 10:25 a.m. on SR1751 just off N.C. 403, four-tenths of a mile from Clinton.

Matthews, reports show, was traveling south on 1751 when she went left of the center line, came back to the right, crossed the center line again, ran off the road to the left, struck a ditch and came to rest in the roadway.

There were no passengers in her vehicle.

Reports show Matthews was not wearing a seatbelt.

This is the seventh fatal collision on Sampson roadways in 2013. The lives of eight people have been claimed in those wrecks.
