Beginning Sept. 3, individuals who wish to apply for a handgun permit (to purchase a handgun) may now do so online by going to the Anson County Sheriff’s Office web page at: www.ansonsheriff.com.
Applicants will see a drop down box entitled “Permits” and may apply and pay for up to three handgun permits online. The permit cost remains at $5 each (as set by the state). There will be a one-time $3 processing fee to pay online. When the permit is complete, applicants will be notified online or by telephone or text, and can come to the Sheriff’s Office after the mandatory five-day waiting period, show picture identification and pick up their permits.
Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen said, “We are trying to streamline this process as much as possible and make it much more convenient for those requesting permits. Now we can only do them during regular business hours. With this new process, permits can be applied for anytime day or night, holidays or weekends.”
The sheriff said that he is aware that some may not have access to a computer nor able to apply on line. Those individuals can still come to the Sheriff’s Office and use a computer that will be set up for the public to use and his staff will help those who are not computer savvy. Also, they will continue to take hard copy applications for the next 30 days.
“This will be a great help to my staff as well as our citizens,” Sheriff Allen said. “Once we get this up and running smoothly, the next phase will be to do concealed carry on line. Our goal is to help us serve the public better and be more convenient for the public.”
