An alleged attempt by a passenger to hide drugs during a Special Investigations Division traffic stop Wednesday has left one Sampson man facing criminal charges and another with a citation.

The incident happened on U.S. 701 south of Clinton when Sheriff’s SID agents were conducting a traffic stop.

According to Cpl. Marcus Smith, during the stop, officers noticed that a passenger in a vehicle driven by James Nicholas Carroll, 32, of 115 Tomahawk Trail, Clinton was attempting to conceal a substance.

That substance turned out to be a gram of methamphetamine and a gram of marijuana.

The passenger, Marshall Leonard Pope, 25, of 414 Wrye Branch Road, Clinton, was taken into custody and charged with felony possession of meth, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and misdemeanor resist, delay and obstruct.

He was placed under a $5,000 bond and later released. He is expected to make his first appearance in Sampson District Court Friday, Aug. 30.

Carroll was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia. His court date is Sept. 25.

Smith said this is the second time in recent weeks that a passenger has attempted to conceal controlled substances while at involved in a traffic stop.

The corporal also emphasized again how important traffic stops are.

“The are very vital. They help us remove drugs from our streets,” Smith said.
