A bank robbery in Rockingham led to a chase and eventual crash in Anson County on Friday afternoon.

Anson County Sheriff’s Deputies took Thomas Presley Jr., 57, of Marshville into custody following a chase. Presley allegedly robbed the BB&T at 920 Rockingham Road in Rockingham and made a threat regarding a possible explosive device, according to a press release from the Rockingham Police Department.

Following the robbery, Rockingham police officers spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop it but the driver refused to stop and led the chase to Anson County. The suspect was reportedly traveling over 100 miles per hour when he entered Anson County on U.S. 74 at the Pee Dee River bridge, Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen said. Deputies joined the chase when the suspect entered the county while other officers used stop-sticks near West Wall Street on the east side of Wadesboro in attempt to deflate the suspect vehicle’s tires.

Although both front tires were hit with the deployed stop-sticks, the suspect continued west on 74, but at a lower speed, according to Allen. Inside the city limits, the suspect entered oncoming traffic and hit victim Sylverna Wall’s vehicle head-on near the Wade Mill area. Presley attempted to run but was caught by deputies and taken to the Anson Community Hospital in the custody of the deputies for “complaints of pain,” Rockingham Chief Billy Kelly said.

Presley was later transferred to CMC-Main in Charlotte in the custody of the Rockingham Police Department. Wall was treated for unknown injuries and released from the local hospital.

Deputies recovered an undisclosed sum of money from Presley’s vehicle. According to the RPD release, “the police department in conjunction with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Dept., multiple agencies from Anson County, as well as the FBI is continuing to investigate the incident.”
