A 25-year-old Sampson County man found out quickly that trying to avoid a checking station and then running from law enforcement only lands you in deeper trouble — and in jail.

Timothy Joshua Butler was taught that lesson late Thursday afternoon, soon after a flee attempt landed him behind bars under a $10,000 secured bond, facing a string of charges.

Butler remained in the Sampson County Detention Center late Friday afternoon, charged with felony flee to elude arrest and misdemeanor offenses reckless driving to endager, driving while license revoked, resisting a public officer, two counts of child abuse, an unsafe movement violation, speeding 100 mph in a 35 mph zone and failing to heed lights and sirens.

The charges came after a vehicle, later determined to be driven by Butler, attemped to avoid a checking station set up by the Sampson County Criminal Interdiction Division on U.S. 701 some three miles outside of Garland.

Sheriff’s Cpl. Marcus Smith said CID officers at the checking station noticed a vehicle turn around as it approached the stop area. Officers pursued the vehicle which, in turn, picked up speed, estimated at 100 mph.

But, Smith said, the chase didn’t last long and the vehicle pulled into a convenience store parking lot in Garland.

“When the officers approached the suspect, he resisted, but officers were able to subdue him and take him into custody,” Smith said.

Butler was immediately taken to the Detention Center and charged.

He is scheduled to make his first appearance in Sampson District Court on those charges Aug. 30.
