The off-season flew by, but who’s complaining?

Football is back in Sampson County, and it was brought back with the Pigskin Jamboree at Clinton High School, as it annually is. Clinton, Lakewood, Hobbton, Union, and Midway all participated in the event, with each team playing eight 10-minute sessions, 4 on offense and 4 on defense. Each offense would face each defense, and vice versa.

In the first session for Union, their defense held the Hobbton Wildcats scoreless. In Union’s first offensive session, Dezmond Faison scored the first two of many touchdowns for Union throughout the night. Faison went on to score a total of 5 times throughout the night, while Dustin Alphin scored 3 times, Marcus Kenan scored once, and Traquan Peterson scored a touchdown as well.

The Spartan defense forced a total of 3 fumbles on the night, 2 coming in the third session, when they faced Lakewood’s offense. Ryan Hall and Shyquan Brunson shared snaps at the quarterback position. Both played well, and will likely share the spot early in the season.

Union’s Head Coach Doug Burley said he was pleased with his team’s effort. He said he liked the way his offense played, and the defense did some nice things also.

“I try to tell the boys not to worry about wins and losses, I just want them to be competitive” continued Burley. He also stated there is obviously some things they need to work on with it being so early in the season.

One thing the Spartans seemed to have going for them Friday evening was their running game. Dezmond Faison was unstoppable and nearly impossible to catch if he turned the corner, and Dustin Alphin appeared to be running hard, downhill the entire evening.

The offensive line did a good job of blocking, and the backs did a great job of reading the defense and finding the holes in the defense.

Union kicks off its 2013 season in Salemburg this Friday evening against the Lakewood Leopards. Lakewood will be looking for revenge, after Union put them down in the first round of the playoffs last year.
